Hotel Management Entrance Tests in India

National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (Society) was set up in the year 1982 by Govt. of India as an autonomous body for coordinated growth and development of hospitality management education in the country.

Initially, the Council was set up in the name of National Board of Studies in Food Management, Catering & Nutrition under the administrative control of Ministry of Agriculture (Deptt. Of Food) and subsequently it was transferred to Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India in the year 1984 with renaming as National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology.  The office of the Council is situated at A-34, Sector-62, Noida (U.P.) in its own building whereas registered office is at Pusa, New Delhi.

The Council regulates academics in the field of Hospitality Education & training that is imparted at the 21 (twenty one) Central Govt. sponsored Institutes of Hotel Management, 19 (nineteen) State Govt. sponsored IHMs offering Degree level program; 3 (three) State Govt. sponsored IHMs offering Diploma/Craft Certificate level programs, 1 (one) PSU owned Institute, 13 (thirteen) private Institutes and 9 (nine) Food Craft Institutes that function in different parts of the country.

Through the Council, these institutes offer 11 (eleven) different professional programs leading to award of Certificate, Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Master Degree. (The last two programs are in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University).

Programme Details

If you are between 18 and 20 years of age, have successfully completed or are completing Class XII, join the Systematic Training and Education Programme (STEP) in one of the hotels of The Oberoi Group.

STEP is an opportunity for students to participate in a three-year programme that offers practical training at a hotel of The Oberoi Group. You will be trained in the four core operational departments of a hotel: Front Office, Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Service and Kitchen.

We offer two Programmes under STEP:

The Kitchen Operations Programme

The Kitchen Operations Programme involves training in Western and Indian kitchens and specialist sections such as bakery, pastry and cold kitchen.

The Hotel Operations Programme

The Hotel Operations Programme consists of two streams:

i. Front Office / Food and Beverage Service focus
ii. Housekeeping focus

The application process for these programmes begins in October each year. The programmes commence in August.

In addition to practical training in a hotel of The Oberoi Group, you are enrolled for a Bachelor's Degree in Tourism Studies (BTS) from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). We provide assistance in the form of a dedicated study day once a week, IGNOU fees, reference books and an additional three weeks leave to enable you to take the IGNOU exams. We also offer you a monthly stipend, accommodation, meals on duty, uniform and medical insurance.

Your progress will be reviewed at regular intervals by means of written and practical assessments. Appraisals will be conducted to support the development of appropriate attitudes and behaviours. A transcript of achievement is issued at the end of each year.

The hotel that you will be assigned to for the duration of the programme is at the sole discretion of The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development.

This career opportunity is subject to your performance during the programme and availability of a suitable vacancy. Alternately you may seek entry into our two-year post graduate management training programme at The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development (OCLD).

On successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a Bachelor of Tourism Studies (BTS) degree from IGNOU. You will also receive a Certificate of Proficiency from The Oberoi Group for the training you will undergo during the three-year STEP programme.

Oberoi STEP Admission Process

Interview Round Selection Process Evaluation Criteria
Round 1 In the first round of Oberoi STEP interview process, candidates are divided into groups of 15-20 aspirants each. Here, candidates need to perform many activities as well as attempt different questionnaires. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of criteria such as grooming, poise and spoken English.
Round 2 Candidates who are shortlisted in Round 1 of the Oberoi interview process are eligible to appear for Round 2 of the interview process. In this round, candidates have to appear before a panel comprising of faculty members wherein a one-on-one meeting is held. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of their behavior, personality and it is also checked if the candidate has aptitude for hospitality.
Round 3 Candidates who are shortlisted in Round 2 are further eligible to appear for the next interview round in the selection process for Oberoi STEP. In this round, candidates need to appear for another round of activities and attempt some questionnaires. This also includes a final interview with a panel. However, this Oberoi interview round may be conducted on a different day as well as city as against Round 1 and Round 2. Guru Gobind Indraprastha University

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, popularly known as Indraprastha University was established in 1998, by the Govt. of NCT-Delhi. The University aims to promote and facilitate higher education with focus on professional education like engineering, medicine, dentistry, law, hospitality etc. It is a teaching and affiliating University. Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (BCIHMCT) runs four year BHMCT program, as per the curriculum designed by Indraprastha University. The norms and standards for delivery of the courses are as laid down by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of HRD, and Government of India. The BHMCT program is divided into eight semesters each of five months duration. Admission to this course is through IPUCET (BHMCT). IPUCET (BHMCT) tests the knowledge of accounts, commerce and science apart from regular areas like Verbal ability, Reasoning and GK tested in other hotel management entrance tests.

COURSE FEE: Rs. 3.00 Lakhs over 3 years (Government sponsored Institutes)

SEATS: 120 (85% Reserved for Delhi Schools; NCR not included)


Eligibility criteria for IPUCET (BHMCT) i.e. the entrance test for hotel management course offered by IPU is as follows:

  • Candidate should have passed class XII of CBSE or its equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate*
  • Candidate must also have passed in English (core or electiveor functional) as a subject.
  • Candidates awaiting results / appearing for the qualifying exam can also appear for CET subject to the fulfillment of the above conditions on declaration of the result.
  • Candidate should not be beyond 21 years of age.
  • Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Widows or Wards of Defence Personnel/Persons With Disability will be allowed 5% relaxation of marks in the minimum eligibility requirement, irrespective of the fact whether there exists any reservation for any category of such candidates or not.


*Aggregate of 50% marks in the 12th class for the purpose of eligibility will be taken as the aggregate of best foursubjects (unless otherwise specified) including English and compulsory subject(s), if any. These compulsorysubjects will vary for various programs.Compulsory subject(s) if changed, whatever applicablewill be notified on university website before start of the counseling.


Students aspiring to get into Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (BCIHMCT) should appear for IPUCET (BHMCT). IPUCET (BHMCT) is a multiple choice questions test, conducted in paper based format. The paper consists of 150 questions to be answered in 2 ½ Hrs. Every Correct Answer is awarded 4 marks and a penalty (Negative Marking) of 1 mark is imposed on every wrong answer.
